Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, recently introduced “Meta,” which is the new name of the parent company and brand that is bringing together their apps and technologies. The term “metaverse” is used to describe the new immersive platform that will touch every aspect of Meta. The company website explained:
The metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world. It’s the next evolution in a long line of social technologies, and it’s ushering in a new chapter for our company.
Metaverse will allow the users to feel present with other people and other places. Whether it is gaming, entertainment, work, fitness, education or social connections, 3D spaces and virtual reality experiences will be impacted by the metaverse. With the use of holograms, users will be able to spend quality time in their virtual experiences and open more opportunities to move across the globe while seated on your couch.
Meta announced it will be investing $150 million toward developing the next generation of metaverse creators. In the future, users will access technology for immersive experiences online that feel and appear to be real. It will alter the way we learn and communicate.
What does it Mean for Now?
The corporate structure under Meta is not changing at this point. However, their financial reporting will change starting the fourth quarter of 2021. The company’s two operating segments will report as Family of Apps and Reality Labs. Additionally, the new stock ticker “MVRS” will start being used for trading on December 1, 2021.
Will my Facebook Account Change?
At this point, the Meta announcement appears to be focused on the future and the evolution of technology. No changes to the way Facebook functions have been announced. Obviously, as advancements are made and the new 3D and virtual reality technologies progress, we will see changes and transformations be announced. But, for now, you can proceed as normal with your social media efforts.
