Life is about priorities. And when you own or run a law firm, you have to let go of the things that either don’t matter or that someone else could be doing as well or better than you.

Unfortunately, many lawyers are control freaks. And while having your fingers in every single little pie may serve you well while you are building your business, it becomes a liability for you eventually when no one can make a move without you.

To run a successful law firm, you have to learn to do what you do best and leave the rest to others you hire who are excellent at what they do best. Unless you do, you are not in control of your own life. You don’t set your own priorities; your law firm does because nothing happens without you. This leaves little time for yourself and your family.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to build a law firm that throws off enough cash on a regular basis to not only cover your payroll, cover your overhead, give you a nice salary, but also put away a lot of money for your future, for your family, for your legacy?

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a law firm that gives you the flexibility to take first-class vacations multiple times a year? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a law firm that not only provides you with a nice living but actually makes money even when you’re not at the office?

When I speak to gatherings of attorneys, I usually talk about creating this kind of firm, which I call a “lifestyle law firm” — a business that enables you to do what you want, when you want to do it. And I can see from many faces in my audience that they don’t think this is attainable. That’s how I spot the control freaks.

I can tell you from my own experience — and that of many attorneys I know who have made it a priority to build a business that can run smoothly without micromanagement — that it is attainable. It all starts with learning to let go, hiring the right people and letting them do their jobs, and outsourcing some operational functions that are better left to more expert professionals.
