Most law firms we work with do not have an unlimited budget — or a dedicated marketing team — to market their firms. But they still realize the necessity to do something to get their name out there, since the days when being a skilled attorney was enough to attract new clients are long gone.

Marry necessity to a shoestring budget, and you have my 7 tips on how you can market your law firm in a budget-friendly way:

  1. Whatever you have to spend, spend it on SEO.

Implementing good SEO practices makes it easier for potential new clients to find you online, which is the first place prospects go to find a lawyer. You can have a great website, but without an SEO plan, most people will never find it. Hire an SEO professional to help you find the right keywords and implement local search strategies to attract your target audience.

  1. List yourself on legal directories (it’s free)

Attorney directory sites like Avvo are very popular and you can claim your listing for free. Be sure to make it as complete as possible and take the opportunity to answer questions on the platform to increase your visibility.

  1. Network online and offline.

Establish social media profiles on Facebook and LinkedIn and then learn how to use these platforms for maximum visibility and networking opportunities. Find and attending networking events in your community where people who are likely to either use you or recommend you gather.

  1. Work on referrals and reviews.

Word-of-mouth marketing is highly effective for attorneys, so work on creating a network of referral sources and on obtaining reviews from past or current clients that you can showcase on your website and social media profiles.

  1. Become a resource for advice.

Look for speaking engagements, give webinars online, and author educational articles to post on a blog or social media to start building your reputation as an expert in your field of practice.

  1. Track all your efforts.

How many visitors to your website take the next step to contact you? How many people contact your firm but don’t make an appointment? How many people are finding you online and what keywords are they using to do so? Keeping track of how your marketing strategies are performing will keep you on track.
